Research and Development Group
About Us
The R&D Group provides expert technological knowledge and skills in the development of new digital collections, projects and initiatives managed by the CDLA, other library departments and partner institutions. Working collaboratively with Library Systems, UNC Information Technology Services, RENCI and other departments, the R&D Group researches, develops, tests and deploys new applications and databases. The R&D group also recommends software solutions to projects and advises the CDLA staff, faculty, librarians and partners in other institutions in the areas of digital library technology.
The Group maintains CDLA's information technology infrastructure, and provides programming support to other units for workflow automation, data conversion and batch processing. The R&D programmers lead CDLA efforts in monitoring emerging trends in information retrieval systems and the investigation of innovative technologies, tools and standards in the digital library field for potential implementation in digital projects.

Project web site and system interface development design and implementation of an advanced search functionality; pan & zoom image viewer and PostgreSQL database development. - North Carolina Maps
Pan & zoom image viewer development; design and implementation of an advanced search function; development of the maps database using Django and a relational PostgreSQL database to hold project metadata. - Long Civil Rights Movement project (in partnership with UNC Press)
Development of the prototype annotation service with Django and eXist; project web site maintenance and development. - Thomas E. Watson Papers Digital Collection
Usability studies and user interface design; project web site development; pan & zoom image viewer development; data conversion and upload. - Documenting the American South databases
Current maintenance, architecture and functionality improvements.
